24 Hours in Dubai: Turning a Layover into an Adventure
If you’re flying through the Middle East anytime soon—especially with Etihad Airways—you might have the chance to turn your layover into a mini adventure. And trust me, you should. With just one day in Dubai, we soaked in skyscraper views, explored centuries-old souks, and even had time for a late-night food crawl. Here’s how we made the most of a whirlwind 24 hours in this futuristic-meets-traditional city—and how you can, too.
Why Dubai Makes a Perfect Stopover
Dubai is made for travelers short on time but hungry for adventure. Thanks to Etihad Airways' free stopover program, we spent a full day exploring without changing our final destination. It’s easy to build in a 1–3 day stop in Abu Dhabi or Dubai when flying with them, and they even offer discounted hotel options (some even complimentary depending on the fare class).
We chose Traders Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri in Abu Dhabi. While technically not in Dubai, it gave us easy access to both cities. The hotel offered an early breakfast when we arrived at 7 a.m. and let us check in just 30 minutes later—perfect after an overnight flight.
Getting to Dubai: Easy & Scenic
The drive from Abu Dhabi to Dubai takes about an hour along a well-maintained highway. Renting a car was straightforward, and traffic wasn’t nearly as intimidating as we expected—just keep an eye out for speed cameras!
We made Dubai Mall our central hub for the day. Not only is it attached to the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain, but it’s also the starting point for the Big Bus Dubai hop-on hop-off tour, which became our go-to for sightseeing without the hassle.
First Stop: The Burj Khalifa
No Dubai layover is complete without a visit to the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. We booked tickets to the “At The Top” experience (floors 124 & 125) and were whisked to the top in a high-speed elevator. The 360° views are breathtaking—desert, skyline, and sea all in one frame.
Tip: Book your tickets in advance and aim for a morning slot to avoid the thickest crowds.

Explore with the Big Bus Tour
With limited time, the Big Bus Dubai tour made it easy to get a feel for the city. It offers two main routes:
- Red Route (City Tour): Covers historic Dubai, including Dubai Creek, Bastakiya Quarter, Gold & Spice Souks, and the Dubai Frame
- Blue Route (Beach Tour): Takes you through Dubai Marina, JBR, Palm Jumeirah, and offers views of Atlantis and the Burj Al Arab
We started with the Red Route, where highlights included the Museum of the Future (a silver ring-shaped architectural marvel), a glimpse of Za’abeel Palace, and the peaceful, history-rich streets of Al Fahidi Historical District.
Then we switched to the Blue Route to soak in Dubai’s beachside glitz. From the sleek towers of Dubai Marina to the pastel fantasy of Atlantis, the contrast between the two tours showed us just how layered Dubai really is.
Catch the Dubai Fountain at Night
We made it back to Dubai Mall just in time for the Dubai Fountain show, which happens every 30 minutes in the evening. With the Burj Khalifa lighting up above us and Arabic music echoing through the plaza, it felt like a dream.
Tip: Arrive early for a good viewing spot along the lakefront.
Where to Eat: Time Out Market Dubai
For dinner, we headed to Time Out Market—a curated food hall filled with some of the city’s top culinary talent. The atmosphere was relaxed, with communal tables and options for every craving. We sampled dishes from Latin America, Greece, and a smoky BBQ counter—and everything was fantastic.
Tip: If you're with a group, this is a great spot where everyone can find something they love.
Travel Tip: Don’t Lose Your Rental in the Dubai Mall Garage
Pro tip from experience: remember your license plate number! Dubai Mall has an underground garage that rivals airport terminals in size. Since we didn’t know our rental’s plate number, we spent 45 minutes wandering levels looking for it. Funny in hindsight—not so much in the moment.
Final Thoughts
Dubai completely surprised us. For a place we thought would just be a fun stopover, it turned out to be a highlight of our trip. In just one day, we got a taste of modern luxury, rich culture, and desert-meets-coastline beauty—all without feeling rushed.
If you find yourself with a long layover in the UAE, don’t spend it in the airport lounge. With a little planning, you can turn a few hours into memories you’ll never forget.
