Our home base was the breathtaking Lilium Hotel Santorini, perched on the edge of the caldera. The views? Unreal. Our suite came with a private plunge pool and an uninterrupted panorama of the deep blue sea. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. The staff were exceptional—kind, intuitive, and always ready with a helpful tip or seamless arrangement. Even our simple, jet-lagged meal of a cheeseburger and club sandwich from the on-site resturant and bar, impressed us with its quality and presentation.

We rented a scooter, which was perfect for reaching activities that didn’t offer pickup and for zipping between villages. It gave us total freedom and helped avoid overpriced taxis (like our $40, five-minute Uber from Fira—lesson learned).

1. Wander Through Fira + The Greek Wedding Show
Fira is lively, colorful, and packed with charm. We explored its winding streets, browsed shops, and caught The Greek Wedding Show—a live performance that blends music, dance, and interactive storytelling. While the dancing crowd participation wasn’t our thing, the plate smashing , flowing wine, tasty bread and snacks, and festive energy made it a night to remember. It was immersive, lively, and the perfect way to kick off our first night on the island.
2. Wine Tour Through the Island’s Best Vineyards
We spent a day visiting Winery Hatzidakis, Santo Wines, and Anhydrous Winery. From learning about the traditional kouloura method of growing grapes in basket shapes to sipping Assyrtiko with caldera views, this tour was both educational and romantic.
Winery Hatzidakis
Our first stop, Winery Hatzidakis, was small, rustic, and full of heart. We learned about the traditional kouloura vine method, which protects grapes from Santorini’s intense wind and sun. The tasting was intimate and thoughtful, with crisp Assyrtiko stealing the show. Paired with simple bites like cheese and olives, each glass told a story. A quick tour of the cellar rounded out this charming visit.
Santo Wines
Santo Wines wowed us with its cliffside location and stunning caldera views. The sunset here was unreal—fiery and unforgettable. We sipped our wine flight alongside tapas of fruit, cheese, and meats, while the staff thoughtfully handed out jackets to block the chill. Refined yet relaxed, this was the most scenic and romantic stop of the day.
Anhydrous Winery
Our last winery, Anhydrous, had a laid-back, modern vibe. While the wines weren’t our favorite, the two small tapas were tasty, and the staff were welcoming. It was a mellow final stop—perfect before heading off to catch the Volcanic Firework Festival later that evening.

3. Catch the Volcano Fireworks Festival
By pure luck, our visit aligned with Santorini’s Volcano Festival, a firework display that simulates a volcanic eruption over the caldera. We climbed past a small chain (rebels!) to find the perfect cliffside view—and it was one of the most memorable moments of the trip.
4. Greek Cooking Class in Santorini
Hosted at Raki Restaurant by Chef Christos,was a highlight of our trip. Our small group of eight gathered around square tables, ready to cook.
First up: tzatziki as we chopped fresh vegetables, Chef whipped up his own secret version. Next up: hands-on prep of pastitsio—layered pasta, savory meat, and creamy béchamel. Lastly: tomatokeftedes—crispy tomato fritters that quickly became our favorite.
After cooking, we sat down to enjoy our creations with local wine and great conversation. It wasn’t just a class—it felt like a cozy, flavorful evening with new friends.
5. Santorini Highlights & Castles Tour
This full-day tour weaves together Santorini’s most iconic and lesser-known treasures—a thoughtfully paced journey that let us peel back the layers of Santorini, from ancient ruins and medieval villages to musical traditions and seaside charm. If you’re craving a mix of culture, history, and stunning views (without having to plan every detail yourself), this tour is the perfect way to explore the island’s soul in just one day.
Pyrgos
Our tour began in Pyrgos, a charming hilltop village crowned by a Venetian castle. We wandered narrow stone alleys, passing whitewashed homes and bursts of bougainvillea. Along the way, we stopped at historic churches like Agios Nikolaos and Saint George, learning about Santorini’s deep spiritual and maritime history. At the summit, we were rewarded with panoramic views of the island—an unforgettable start to the day.
Symposion Cultural Center
In Megalohori, we visited the Symposion Cultural Center, where Greek mythology, music, and storytelling came to life. We listened to ancient instruments like the lyra and tsabouna, and even got a hands-on introduction. The immersive setting inside a restored stone building made the experience feel both historic and magical.
Akrotiri
Next, we explored Akrotiri, Santorini’s own “Pompeii.” Buried in ash around 1600 BC, the ancient Minoan city revealed multi-story buildings, colorful frescoes, and an advanced drainage system—proof of its once-sophisticated society. A powerful look into the island’s ancient past.

Perissa Black Sand Beach
We broke for lunch at Perissa Beach, known for its unique black volcanic sand. Though too chilly to swim, we loved our meal at Chilli Beach Bar—gyros, cheese sticks, and fruity cocktails, all with ocean views. The service was great, and the fresh fruit they brought at the end was a sweet surprise.
Emporio Village
Emporio charmed us with its labyrinthine alleys, blue doors, and quiet local vibe. We explored the Castelli of Emporio, a medieval fortress once used to protect villagers from pirates. The tilework and narrow streets made it feel like stepping back in time.
Wine Museum Koutsogiannopoulos
Built into a 300-meter underground cave, the Wine Museum took us on a fascinating journey through Santorini’s winemaking history. We loved seeing vintage tools and learning how volcanic soil shapes the island’s grapes. A guided tasting at the end introduced us to standout wines like Assyrtiko and sweet, golden Vinsanto.
Firostefani & Oia + Sunset
We stopped in Firostefani to snap photos of its famous blue dome and the Rock of Skaros, then continued to Oia to hunt for the best sunset view. Crowds led us to a tucked-away spot—Sunset Bar—where we scored a table with wine, tapas, and the most magical view of the sun melting into the Aegean.
6. Horseback Riding to Eros Beach
At sunset, we rode horses along dusty trails to the black sand shores of Eros Beach. Our guide shared fascinating facts about Santorini’s volcanic terrain, and the views as we reached the beach were absolutely stunning. Even our horses got a little flirty, which was adorable.
Tip: Wear something you don’t mind getting dusty, and bring water!

Mama’s Santorini (Thira)
We had dinner at Mama’s Santorini, a stylish yet cozy spot in Thira. Without a reservation, we lucked out and were seated upstairs with a lovely view. The service was warm and attentive, and we kicked things off with drinks and (of course) Tomatokeftedes—though tasty, they couldn’t quite top the ones we made ourselves.
I ordered the chicken souvlaki, which was juicy, flavorful, and perfectly grilled, served with warm pita, creamy tzatziki, and roasted veggies. William ordered a lamb dish that was just fall-off-the-bone tender and rich with Mediterranean spices.
A solid 9/10—great food, great vibe, and a perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring.
Corner Restaurant (Thira)
We took our scooter for a spin into Thira and stopped at Corner for breakfast—it had a solid 4.7 rating, so we were hopeful. We grabbed a cozy window seat, but the service was slow, and we waited quite a while before anyone took our order.
I chose an avocado toast and omelet, while William went for a traditional breakfast plate. Unfortunately, the food was a letdown—cold eggs, everything served on plain, untoasted white bread, and my “avocado toast” was just mayo spread with huge slices of avocado on bread. For the price, it felt underwhelming. We’d rate it a 2/10 and wouldn’t go back.
