Jamaica welcomed us with the tropical Christmas escape we were hoping for—turquoise waters, ocean breezes, colorful sunsets, and the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. After Hurricane Melissa changed our original plans, our trip brought us to Sandals Dunn’s River in Ocho Rios, where we spent our days enjoying poolside cocktails, ocean views, island adventures, and festive Caribbean nights.

Day 1
Welcome to Sandals Dunn’s River — Tropical Views, Island Vibes & First Impressions
Arriving in Jamaica
Our tropical Christmas getaway began with our arrival in Montego Bay, just weeks after Hurricane Melissa. Originally, we planned to stay at Sandals Montego Bay, but after the storm, we decided to move our reservation to Sandals Dunn’s River in Ocho Rios. We considered changing our flight as well, but with Montego Bay’s airport fully operating and the transfer still manageable, we decided to keep our original plans.
We landed around 1 p.m., excited to finally be in Jamaica. Navigating customs, however, was our first unexpected challenge. The process was confusing, and while we noticed some travelers bypassing the longer lines, we weren’t exactly sure how. After about an hour, we finally made it through, only to enter the chaos of baggage claim. The area was small, crowded, and packed with travelers searching for their luggage.

Checking Into Sandals Dunn’s River
Thankfully, once we made it outside, the stress quickly faded. A Sandals representative greeted us and escorted us to their private airport lounge, where we could finally relax. With comfortable seating, drinks, snacks, dedicated bathrooms, and staff handling our luggage tags, it was exactly the reset we needed. After about twenty minutes, we boarded our transfer and began the hour-long drive toward Ocho Rios.
Arriving at the resort instantly shifted us into vacation mode. We were welcomed with music, smiling staff, and refreshing drinks before completing check-in. When we reached our room, we immediately knew we had made the right choice. The space was beautiful, featuring a massive shower, modern design, and an outdoor soaking tub overlooking the ocean. It was the perfect tropical escape, and we couldn’t have been happier.
Dinner at Cascata
After settling in, we headed out for our first dinner at Cascata Italian Restaurant, one of the dining options at Sandals Dunn’s River. We started with the caprese salad, though unfortunately, the tomatoes tasted a little off. For dinner, I kept it classic with fettuccine alfredo, while William ordered the swordfish. Both dishes were okay but didn’t leave a lasting impression.
Ending Our First Night
Dessert, however, was the biggest disappointment. As someone who loves tiramisu, I had high hopes, but this version was easily the worst I’ve ever had. Instead of the creamy, coffee-soaked dessert I expected, the texture was closer to jello, and I couldn’t finish it. William’s chocolate and roasted hazelnut tart was better, but still just okay. Overall, Cascata wasn’t somewhere we felt the need to revisit.
After dinner, we wandered around the resort, exploring the beach and taking in the beautiful property before heading back to our room. One unexpected perk was being able to enjoy the live outdoor entertainment right from our balcony. Determined to end the night with a better dessert, I ordered chocolate cake from room service, which surprisingly became the best sweet treat of the evening.
With ocean views, music in the background, and our first night officially underway, we settled in — excited for the relaxing Christmas escape ahead.

Day 2
Sunset Photos, Island Drinks & A Relaxing Day at Sandals Dunn’s River
A Slow Resort Morning
Our first full morning in Jamaica started with a visit to the breakfast buffet. Compared to other resorts we’ve visited, it was definitely on the smaller side, but it still offered a decent variety with fresh options and stations like made-to-order omelets. The only downside was that the popular stations quickly became crowded, making breakfast feel a little more hectic than relaxing.
After breakfast, we headed over to the Aqua Center, excited for our scheduled SNUBA excursion. Sandals Dunn’s River offers a variety of included water activities, and SNUBA sounded like the perfect balance between snorkeling and scuba diving. You breathe through a regulator connected to an air supply floating above you, allowing you to explore deeper underwater without needing scuba certification.

Pool Drinks & A Change of Plans
Unfortunately, when we arrived, we found out there had been a miscommunication. Even though we booked through the resort app, they explained that we should have checked in with the Aqua Center the day before to confirm a SNUBA guide was available. Since we arrived late the previous day and the center was already closed, we had no way of knowing.
It was disappointing, but thankfully they were able to reschedule us for the following day, giving us something exciting to look forward to.
With our plans suddenly open, we embraced exactly what a tropical vacation is meant for — relaxing by the pool. We spent the afternoon at the main pool, enjoying drinks from the Laughing Waters Beach Bar and Plaza Bar. In true William fashion, he quickly made friends with the bartenders, and before long, they were creating some incredible drinks for us.
Sunset Photos Around the Resort
Later that evening, we got ready for a sunset photoshoot around the property. The session itself was complimentary, and you only paid for the photos you wanted afterward.
Our photographer was amazing — funny, easygoing, and great at helping us pose naturally while capturing exactly what we wanted. The digital photos were $20 each, and we ended up choosing five. Absolutely no regrets. The sunset pictures turned out beautiful and became the perfect keepsake from our Christmas getaway.
Dinner at Edessa
After our photoshoot, we made our way to Edessa, the resort’s Mediterranean-inspired restaurant.
We started with a spread of appetizers including the village salad, baked feta, kolokithokeftedes, and spanakopita. Everything was flavorful and a much better start than our dinner the night before.
For our entrées, I ordered the chicken kebab while William chose the grilled lamb chops. The portions were definitely on the smaller side, but overall the food was fresh, enjoyable, and Edessa was somewhere we would happily visit again.
The evening entertainment that night was a piano sing-along, which didn’t quite catch our attention, so we opted for a cozy night in instead. Naturally, that meant ordering another slice of chocolate cake from room service, along with a few late-night bites, before settling into bed.
It wasn’t the adventure-filled day we originally planned, but between poolside drinks, beautiful sunset photos, and a much better dinner experience, it ended up being exactly the relaxing island day we needed.
Day 3
SNUBA, Poolside Drinks & Dancing
Finally Trying SNUBA
The next morning, we woke up with one mission in mind — checking with the Aqua Center to see if our SNUBA excursion was finally happening. After missing out the day before, we were really hoping everything would work out, especially since we chose this experience because we wanted something more immersive than traditional snorkeling.
Thankfully, luck was on our side. They had an instructor available, and after a quick lesson on the equipment, breathing techniques, and what to expect underwater, we were ready to go. We boarded the boat and headed out onto the water, which was definitely rougher than expected. William adjusted almost immediately, but for me, it took a little longer. Even knowing I could breathe, convincing my body not to panic underwater was a challenge at first.

Underwater Views & Poolside Relaxing
Once I finally relaxed and found my rhythm, everything changed — it was incredible. Being able to stay below the surface and truly take in the underwater world felt completely different from snorkeling. We could see so much more, move at a slower pace, and fully appreciate everything around us. We even found a complete sand dollar, which made the experience feel even more special. By the end, we were so glad we decided to pay extra for SNUBA. It was absolutely worth it and quickly became one of our favorite memories from the trip.
Back on shore, we spent the rest of the afternoon exactly how you should at an all-inclusive resort — lounging by the pool, enjoying drinks, grabbing lunch from Isola Pizzeria, and sneaking in a much-needed nap before dinner.
Dinner at Zuka
That evening, we headed to Zuka, a Latin-inspired restaurant with bold flavors and seafood options. For appetizers, I ordered the Mechado Pork Quesadilla while William tried the Shrimp Ceviche. The quesadilla quickly became one of my favorite dishes of the trip — flavorful, warm, and absolutely delicious. William thought the ceviche was just okay, but thankfully the entrées made up for it.
For dinner, we ordered the Surf & Turf Parrillada and the Chuletón Ahumado, and we both agreed this was a restaurant we would happily return to. The dishes were flavorful, well-seasoned, and easily one of the better meals we had at the resort.
Cultural Dancing, Karaoke & Rum Club
After dinner, we made our way to the lobby bar for the evening entertainment — a cultural dance performance. The show completely exceeded our expectations. The performers were talented, full of energy, and you could tell they genuinely loved what they were doing. It was impossible not to smile while watching them.
The night continued at Lapidus Lounge for karaoke, where William naturally had to make an appearance. The talent surprised us — guests and even staff members joined in, and everyone was genuinely good. William performed his go-to song, “Tennessee Whiskey,” and the whole atmosphere turned into one big party with people singing, cheering, and dancing along.
Not quite ready for the night to end, we stopped by the Rum Club to listen to the DJ and dance for a while. Even though the dance floor wasn’t packed, the music was great, the drinks were flowing, and it was the perfect way to wrap up the evening.
Between SNUBA, relaxing by the pool, a delicious dinner, and one of the most fun entertainment nights of the trip, this day truly captured everything we hoped for in a tropical Christmas getaway.

Day 4
Dolphin Cove, French Dining & An Unforgettable Night of Entertainment
Breakfast at Edessa
We decided to switch things up and try breakfast at Edessa instead of returning to the buffet. While the buffet had been decent, it was on the smaller side, and we were curious to see what the sit-down breakfast experience had to offer.
I ordered the avocado toast with poached eggs, but we immediately ran into a little confusion. We were initially told they couldn’t serve eggs due to shortages caused by the hurricane, which seemed odd considering the buffet had an omelet station and plenty of egg options available. After checking with the manager, they confirmed they did have eggs after all. It was a strange moment, but thankfully everything worked out.
William ordered the All-American breakfast, and we shared a stack of pancakes. Overall, the food felt fresher and more enjoyable than the buffet, and we were glad we decided to give it a try.
Dolphin Cove Ocho Rios
After breakfast, we boarded the shuttle for Dolphin Cove Ocho Rios, excited for another unique island experience. Once we arrived, we purchased the photo package so we could fully enjoy the moment without worrying about capturing pictures ourselves. Afterward, we were guided through the gift shop and quickly discovered that if you brought anything with you, renting a locker was required.
Once inside, things became a little confusing. There wasn’t much direction about where to go, what the different bracelet colors meant, or when each experience started. We spent some time wandering around the property while waiting for our turn. The area itself was beautiful, although you could still see some of the damage left behind from the hurricane. Between the cooler weather and occasional rain showers, it wasn’t quite the tropical atmosphere we imagined, but we made the best of it.
Eventually, it was our turn to meet the dolphins. After some additional confusion organizing everyone by bracelet colors, we finally made it to the correct area. Our instructor explained how to safely interact with the dolphins, where to touch them, and what to expect throughout the encounter.
The experience itself was incredible. Being that close to such intelligent animals was unforgettable, and it quickly became one of those once-in-a-lifetime memories. The only downside was the amount of waiting involved since only two people could participate at a time.

After our encounter, we picked up our photos and still had quite a bit of time before our shuttle returned. Since food was an additional cost and we already had meals waiting for us back at the resort, we decided to skip lunch there and relax until departure. About an hour and a half later, we were finally back on the shuttle heading toward Sandals.
Dinner at L’Amande
Once we returned, we freshened up and got ready for dinner at L’Amande, the resort’s French restaurant and the only dining option requiring reservations. I started with the Salade de Ratatouille et Pois Chiches, which actually surprised me — it was fresh, flavorful, and much better than expected.
For my entrée, I chose the Poulet Cordon Bleu. The portion was huge, but unfortunately, it was missing some of the flavor I hoped for. William ordered the Magret de Canard à l’Orange and felt similarly. The duck was cooked well but lacked that extra element to make it memorable. Overall, L’Amande was okay, but it wasn’t somewhere we felt the need to revisit.
Acrobat Show & Evening Entertainment
After dinner, we headed to the evening entertainment, beginning with a pre-show trivia game where guests guessed songs from short clips. We joined in and quickly realized we definitely weren’t taking home the win, but the crowd’s energy made it such a fun experience.
The main event of the night was the acrobat show, and it completely exceeded our expectations. Between the fire performances, impressive acrobatics, dancing, and nonstop energy, it had everything. The performers were incredibly talented, and it easily became one of our favorite shows of the entire trip.
After a full day filled with dolphins, new experiences, dining, laughter, and incredible entertainment, we headed back to our room to settle in for the night — ready to soak up every moment of our final day in paradise.
Day 5
One Last Pool Day, Christmas Entertainment & Saying Goodbye to Jamaica
One Last Day in Paradise
Our final full day in Jamaica started exactly how a tropical vacation should — slow, peaceful, and surrounded by sunshine. We kept things simple with breakfast at the buffet before spending the morning soaking up every last moment by the pool. With no major plans on the schedule, we fully embraced a relaxing resort day filled with swimming, lounging, and enjoying the beauty of Sandals Dunn’s River before our final evening.
Dinner at Banyu
For our last dinner, we decided to try Banyu, the resort’s Asian-inspired restaurant. Knowing the portions would likely be smaller, we ordered a variety of dishes to share, starting with tempura shrimp before trying a little bit of everything — fried rice, chicken lo mein, sweet and sour pork, General Tso’s spicy chicken, and Szechuan pepper steak.
Christmas Shows & Nightly Entertainment
Unfortunately, this ended up being our most disappointing meal of the trip. Nothing really stood out, and even simple dishes like the fried rice missed the mark. The flavors weren’t quite what we expected, and compared to some of the other restaurants we enjoyed throughout our stay, Banyu fell short. Since it was our final dinner, we were hoping to end on a stronger note, and this wasn’t somewhere we personally felt the need to revisit.
Thankfully, the evening entertainment completely turned the night around. Determined to make the most of our last night, we decided to experience everything the resort had planned — and it ended up being the perfect sendoff.
The night began with a live cello and violin performance, which was absolutely beautiful. The musicians blended classic sounds with modern songs, creating a performance that felt elegant, unique, and surprisingly fun. Next was Ray Live, whose powerful vocals completely impressed us and showcased just how talented the resort entertainers were.
The pre-show event was a lip-sync competition, and it quickly became one of those unexpectedly hilarious moments. Guests fully committed to their performances, bringing so much personality, laughter, and energy to the stage. The entire crowd was cheering, and it was impossible not to get caught up in the fun.
The main event of the night was the international dance show, and it was completely different from the performance we had seen earlier in the week. Since it was Christmas-themed, the entire show transformed into a tropical winter wonderland filled with festive dancers, elves, the Grinch, Rudolph, Santa, and plenty of holiday magic.
Saying Goodbye to Jamaica
It was the perfect blend of Christmas spirit and island energy — truly the best way we could have ended our tropical holiday getaway.
Before officially calling it a night, we made one final stop at Lapidus Lounge for karaoke. It wasn’t quite as lively as the night before, but William still managed to squeeze in one last song before we headed back to our room and enjoyed our final night in paradise.
Our last morning happened to fall on Christmas, which made leaving even more bittersweet. The resort was filled with festive decorations and thoughtful holiday touches, and we couldn’t help but wish we had just one more day to enjoy it all.
We had one final breakfast at the buffet, said goodbye to the incredible staff who made our stay so memorable, captured a few last photos around the property, and boarded the shuttle back to the airport.
Thankfully, leaving Jamaica was much smoother than arriving. As we headed home, we found ourselves reflecting on all the memories from our tropical Christmas escape — the ocean views, unforgettable adventures, amazing entertainment, and the wonderful people who made Sandals Dunn’s River feel so special.

- Expect extra time at Montego Bay Airport. Customs and baggage claim can get crowded, so patience is key—especially during busy travel seasons.
- Use the Sandals arrival lounge. After customs, the lounge is a great place to relax with drinks, snacks, bathrooms, and seating while waiting for your resort transfer.
- Plan for the drive to Ocho Rios. The transfer from Montego Bay to Sandals Dunn’s River takes about an hour, so keep essentials nearby and enjoy the scenic ride.
🏨 Resort & Room Tips
- Download and use the Sandals app. It’s helpful for checking restaurant menus, entertainment schedules, activities, and making certain reservations.
- Explore the entire resort early. Sandals Dunn’s River has multiple pools, restaurants, bars, and hidden areas, so walking around on day one helps you discover your favorite spots.

Why Jamaica Was the Perfect Tropical Christmas Escape
Jamaica gave us exactly the holiday getaway we were hoping for—warm ocean breezes, beautiful views, relaxing resort days, and a completely different way to celebrate Christmas. Trading winter weather for palm trees, poolside drinks, and island sunsets made this trip one we’ll always remember.
Our stay at Sandals Dunn’s River was the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. From trying SNUBA, visiting Dolphin Cove, enjoying sunset photos, and spending slow afternoons by the pool, every day brought something different.
While not everything was perfect—from a few dining misses to small travel hiccups—the incredible staff, beautiful resort, fun entertainment, and unforgettable experiences made the trip so special. Some of our favorite moments came from the simple things: dancing after dinner, listening to live music, relaxing on our balcony, and slowing down together.
