Day 1

Exploring Stockholm on Midsummer’s Day

Arriving in Stockholm

If you’re following along from the first part of our trip — from Oslo, Norway to Stockholm, Sweden — welcome back to William’s birthday adventure. And if you’re just joining us for the Stockholm chapter, hello and welcome. To catch you up, we left Oslo bright and early, took the train to the airport, and landed in Stockholm around 9 a.m.

Stockholm Stockholm

From there, we ordered an Uber to our hotel, the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel, which immediately felt like the perfect place for our short stay. The lobby was modern and cozy, the staff was kind and welcoming, and our room had that clean Scandinavian simplicity that instantly puts you at ease. Even better, our window overlooked rooftops, greenery, and that soft Stockholm light.

“Stockholm greeted us with quiet streets, crisp waterfront air, and the kind of calm that made the city feel almost private for the day.”

A Quiet Midsummer Morning

Once we dropped our bags, our first mission was food — except the streets were strangely quiet for a Saturday morning. Every café we tried was closed, and each restaurant door was locked. Eventually, we spotted a handwritten sign explaining everything: Midsummer’s Day.

Midsummer is one of Sweden’s biggest holidays, filled with family celebrations, flower crowns, dancing around the maypole, and enjoying the longest days of the year. Because of that, almost everything shuts down, leaving Stockholm with this peaceful, sleepy atmosphere that made our first few hours feel even more unique.

Stockholm Stockholm

With our stomachs rumbling, we made our way back to the hotel and settled on breakfast at Espresso House, which was connected to the lobby. Two breakfast sandwiches, a muffin, and a pair of cappuccinos later, we were officially revived and ready for our walking tour.

Walking Through Stockholm’s History

We walked to the meeting point for our Stockholm walking tour, which quickly became one of the highlights of the day. Our guide immediately brought the city to life as we made our way through Stockholm’s historic streets, islands, and royal landmarks.

One of our first major stops was the Parliament Building, beautifully set on its own little island. From there, we continued to the Royal Palace, one of the largest palaces in Europe with more than 600 rooms. Our guide shared how it remains the working residence of the Swedish monarch, even within the country’s constitutional system.

We then headed toward Riddarholmen Church, one of Stockholm’s oldest buildings and the burial site of Swedish kings for centuries. The nearby narrow alleys, especially Prästgatan, felt like stepping straight into a fairytale.

Stockholm Stockholm

“Gamla Stan was exactly the kind of old-world Europe I love — narrow streets, warm colors, hidden corners, and stories tucked into every building.”

Gamla Stan, Hidden Statues & Harbor Views

Along the way, we passed the elegant Riddarhuset, the Nobel Prize Museum, and Storkyrkan Cathedral, home to the famous Saint George and the Dragon sculpture. Our guide shared the legend behind it, symbolizing good overcoming evil, and explained how iconic it is for Gamla Stan.

We continued weaving through the narrow passages of Gamla Stan. Somewhere along the way, we stopped at Järnpojke, the tiniest statue in Stockholm, nicknamed “the little boy who looks at the moon.” Locals leave scarves, coins, and even tiny hats, and it was one of those sweet little details that made Stockholm feel so charming.

Stockholm Stockholm

Once the tour wrapped up, we walked back toward the water and found a perfect lunch spot at Bröd & Salt, a Scandinavian bakery café with harbor views. We split a pizza and enjoyed a glass of wine and a beer as we watched the boats pass. Afterward, we wandered along the waterfront and came across the statue of Gustav II Adolf, a king our guide had talked about earlier in the day.

“Even with so much closed for Midsummer, Stockholm still gave us history, charm, waterfront views, and one of the calmest travel days of the trip.”

Churros, Greek Food & A Cozy Ending

From there, we headed into a pedestrian shopping district near Parliament, where I naturally had to stop for churros — because at this point, it’s becoming my unofficial global tradition. They were warm, fresh, and unexpectedly delicious.

Stockholm Stockholm

By dinner, we were ready to stay close to the hotel, so we walked over to Greek Taverna Rest.Bar, just down the street. Since our trip to Greece, Greek food always holds a special place in our hearts, and this dinner felt so comforting. We ordered a Greek salad, melted feta with pita, chicken souvlaki, and a lamb gyro — and everything was delicious.

For a sweet end to our day, we stopped at MAX Burgers so I could grab a cookies-and-cream milkshake. It was the perfect cozy ending to a full day in Stockholm.

Next Stop

Tomorrow, we’ll hop on the Arlanda Express and continue William’s birthday adventure in Copenhagen.

Tip: Wear comfortable shoes. This route includes cobblestones, hills, and long stretches of waterfront, so cute shoes will not survive.

Travel Tips

Tips for Planning Your Stockholm, Sweden Trip

🎟️ Tickets & Timing
  • Check for holidays like Midsummer’s Eve and Midsummer’s Day. Many cafés, restaurants, and shops close completely, so plan meals and activities accordingly.
  • Book your walking tour in advance. Popular Gamla Stan and city-center tours can fill up quickly, especially in peak season.
  • Buy attraction tickets online when possible. Places like the Nobel Prize Museum and guided palace visits often have timed entries that help you avoid lines.
  • Consider timing your visit for shoulder hours. Early morning or late afternoon tours are usually less crowded and better for photos in Old Town.
🚶 Walking & Getting Around
  • Stay near Central Station or Norrmalm. Areas close to Stockholm Central and the waterfront make it easy to walk to Parliament, the Royal Palace, and Gamla Stan.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for cobblestones. Old Town’s narrow alleys and stone streets are beautiful but can be uneven.
  • Use the Arlanda Express for airport transfers. It’s fast, reliable, and drops you right at Stockholm Central Station.
  • Combine walking with public transit or Uber. Most sights are walkable, but rideshares or trains can save your feet at the end of a long day.
🍽️ Food Planning
  • Have a backup plan for holiday closures. On days like Midsummer, hotel cafés and chains like Espresso House can be lifesavers when everything else is shut.
  • Embrace fika culture. Plan at least one stop at a bakery café like Bröd & Salt for coffee and a snack between sightseeing stops.
  • Make dinner reservations on weekends. Popular spots—especially cozy places near the water or in Gamla Stan—can fill up quickly.
  • Mix local and familiar favorites. Try Swedish spots, but don’t overlook reliable chains like MAX for a quick late-night bite or milkshake.
🧭 Sightseeing Strategy
  • Start with a guided walking tour. It’s the easiest way to get oriented and learn the stories behind Parliament, the Royal Palace, and Old Town.
  • Cluster Old Town sights in one loop. Parliament, the Royal Palace, Riddarholmen Church, Storkyrkan, the Nobel Prize Museum, and Järnpojke are all walkable from each other.
  • Save time for a waterfront stroll. The harbor path is perfect after lunch—especially near cafés where you can sit and watch the boats.
  • Plan flexible time for wandering. Some of Stockholm’s best moments are found in narrow side streets, hidden courtyards, and quiet squares.
📸 Photo Tips
  • Capture Gamla Stan from the bridges. Bridges between the islands give beautiful views of Old Town’s colorful facades.
  • Visit narrow alleys during softer light. Early morning or evening is perfect for photos on streets like Prästgatan without big crowds.
  • Look up around the Royal Palace and Parliament. The architectural details and stately facades make great wide-angle shots.
  • Use the waterfront for golden hour. Harborside paths and nearby statues, like Gustav II Adolf, glow beautifully in late afternoon light.
